A Quick Reminder: It’s All Hard

We’re into the new year and in hot pursuit of our new year’s resolutions.

Lose the last 10 pounds;

eat a healthier diet;

be more organized;

be more patient;

spend more time with loved ones;

say “thank you” and “I’m sorry”;

be more accountable for our actions;

spend less time in front of screens, etc.

We’re reading multiple books about our resolutions and working the recommended processes to achieve the “new you.” But there’s something wrong. The gains aren’t coming very quickly. People aren’t noticing and praising our efforts. And then we think to ourselves:

Maybe this isn’t really worth the effort. It’s not like I’m a bad person if I watch 8 straight hours of football on Saturday and Sunday. I deserve some ‘me’ time, right?.”

I promised a quick reminder, so here it is: IT’S ALL HARD!

No improvement you are trying to make will be easy. Make peace with that and this will be the year you finally [insert the resolution you’ve been making for the last 10 years without success].

Finally, don’t grade yourself on whether you went off track a little in pursuit of the better you, grade yourself on how you responded to the setback.
