As a leader, the questions you should not be asking yourself include how you get that next promotion, how you make more money, how you get recognized, or how you get close to the big boss. The first question you should be asking yourself is,
“How do I become good?”
Any new advancement you receive will come with a new set of responsibilities. If you focus on how you become GOOD before anything else, you’ll likely find success. Becoming good first means a lot of things and the process of becoming good first will be different for everyone.
The point is that how you become good first is an inherently UNSELFISH question. Because becoming good first as a leader means, or should mean, that all your efforts are geared towards the betterment of your team.
If you take care of becoming a good leader before anything else, you won’t ever have to ask yourself the more selfish questions I outlined above. When we focus on becoming good first as a leader all the selfish concerns: more money, the next promotion, recognition, etc., will take care of themselves.
