Following your intuition is a good thing as long as you understand it.
Countless times I ask clients why they make certain decisions or how they solve challenges and very often the answers I get back are akin to, “I don’t know, I just do it. I’ve been doing it for so long I just act. It’s a gut feeling.”
From a leadership perspective, this is a non-starter regardless of the outcome of your actions.
Why?
Here are two reasons you must understand your intuition as a leader:
- Leaders take conscious action and can recount where things went right and where things went wrong. When a leader takes conscious action, they are able to look back and see where things went wrong and make the necessary, targeted adjustments to avoid similar mistakes in the future. Likewise, if a leader can determine why things went right, they have a blueprint to repeat success going forward.
- You cannot train someone on, or hold someone accountable to, your gut feeling: Among other things, a leader’s job is to train their people and make clear what they are holding their people accountable to. If you as the leader want things done a certain way you must be able to articulate what those things are and why they are important. Otherwise, your actions will be random and so will your results.
The Ice Cold Leader Process is an exercise in logical thinking that builds and helps you understand your intuition through awareness. To truly understand your intuition, begin with having an awareness of what you are doing and why you are doing it. If you do this, you will be on the path towards repeating successes and mitigating mistakes.
As always, the leadership concept is simple, but its execution is difficult.
